Stamped Concrete Maintenance Through New Hampshire Winters

5 min read·February 15, 2025

A properly built stamped concrete patio is durable — but it does need maintenance. Here's how to protect your patio through New Hampshire winters, and what to avoid.

Reseal Every Few Years

The sealer on your stamped concrete protects the color and the surface from water, UV, and wear. In New Hampshire, with our freeze-thaw cycles and sun exposure, plan to reseal every two to three years. The frequency depends on sun exposure, traffic, and the sealer type. We'll tell you what to expect based on your specific patio.

Avoid Salt-Based De-Icers

Rock salt and chemical de-icers can damage the sealer and the concrete surface over time. For a stamped concrete patio, use sand for traction if needed, and avoid de-icing chemicals — especially in the first winter after the pour, while the concrete is still curing.

Snow Removal: Plastic, Not Metal

Use a plastic snow shovel, not a metal one. Metal blades can scratch the sealer and the stamped surface. A plastic shovel or a snow blower with rubber paddles is the right tool. If you use a plow blade, make sure it has a rubber edge.

Don't Let Water Pool

If you notice water pooling on your patio — in a low spot that wasn't there before — that's worth attention. It could indicate settling. A patio with proper drainage and base shouldn't pool water. If it does, call us and we'll take a look.

Furniture and Planters

Use protective pads under metal furniture legs to avoid rust stains and scratches. If you have potted plants on the patio, use saucers or elevate them slightly so water doesn't sit against the sealer. The sealer is durable, but standing water under a planter for a season can leave a mark.

What We Do to Make Maintenance Easier

The base engineering and drainage we build in are what keep your patio from heaving and cracking — the structural problems. The sealer is what keeps the surface looking good. We use quality sealers, we document what we apply, and we'll tell you when to plan your next reseal.
